A German washboard with sturdy ribs made from bakelite or perhaps some other early plastic. The right hand side has a curve, which you can clearly see in the pictures; as this shows no sign of alteration or rebuilding I assume that it has been like that from new. About the name on the board I have discovered very little: the word in smaller letters means something like "Registered Trademark", while the only Fortschritt I can find was or is a maker of tractors and combine harvesters.12¼" (main body width) x 22" (including legs of 3¾").
